Events of interest to the OCD Commmunity

An independent filmmaker, Synapse Pictures (www.synapse-pictures.com), has completed a short film entitled "O.C.D." (www.synapse-pictures.com/ocd.html) that deals with the effects of obsessive compulsive disorder and addresses the truly destructive effects this disorder can have. This film was will be presented at the Boston Film Festival www.bostonfilmfestival.org on Sunday, September 11 at 3:30 pm www.bostonfilmfestival.org/sept11.shtml.

Events of interest to the OCD Commmunity

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will sponsor it's first "Out of the Darkness Community Walk". It will take place October 16 at 9 a.m. in Artisani Park, Brighton along the Charles River. The goal is to raise awareness and support for suicide education and research. The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Massachusetts will hold their 22nd annual state convention on October 30, 2004 in Westford MA at the Westford Regency Hotel. The theme of this convention is "Partnering Toward Recovery" and workshops will echo this theme. For more information go to www.namimass.org or call 781-938-4048. Charles Curie, a national leader in mental health policy, and director of SAMHSA, is the key note speaker. You are invited to celebrate Mental Illness Awareness week, October 3-9 at a reception in the Great Hall of the State House on September 30, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. It will be hosted by Dr. Elizabeth Childs, Commissioner of the Department of Mental Health. Several members of the MA legislature will be there.

Employment Conference for People with Disabilities, Wednesday 2 June 2004: Join disability, employment and workforce development professionals from across the state for renewed focus on employment as a real option for all people with disabilities who want to work. This is Your Life, Creating Your Self-Directed Life Plan, a self-determination workbook developed by the Center on Psychiatric Disability, at the University of Illinois, Chicago. This an easy to use workbook that helps people with psychiatric disabilities think about, choose, plan for and act on a life goal with supports of their choosing. It guides people in mental health recovery to see that life change is a process, with natural twists and turns along the way. Mass Rehabilitation Commision and State Rehabilitation Council to hold public hearings in June 2004. What can these organizations do to increase the number of persons with disabilities to enter, regain or maintain employment. How can they work better with community career centers to achieve better outcomes. How can the quality and scope of their services be enhanced? Working Connections: Friends of the Psychiatrically Disabled Conference, 1 April 2004. The Eleventh Annual Massachuseetts APSE Conference will be held at the Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel and Trade Center, 181 Boston Post Road West, Marlborough MA 01752. Sessions include: Employer Track, Building Effective Employer Relationships, School to Work Track, Best Practices and Resources, Disability Track, Criminal Offender Record Information, Asperger's Syndrome in the Workplace.

The BU Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation will hold a series of spring 2004 workshops at the Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation, Boston University. Topics include: Innovations in Recovery and Rehabilitation, Reclaiming Lives; What professionals need to know about assessment, planning and treatment for people who appear to be stuck on the road to recovery, What professionals need to know about families.
